When I first read the blurb for Trying I was super stoked to read it and immediately requested an ARC so I could get my grubby little hands on it and—for the most part—Heather MacKinnon did not disappoint.
Mack and her husband Bryson are having a tough time of it lately. He’s distant and cold and barely spares a glance for his wife, never mind a proper kiss goodbye. From the beginning it seems that Bryson is a bit of a d-bag, dismissing his wife and making her go off on her own. But, as always, there is more to the story than we get.
At first.
Normally I’m not a fan of stories that entertain lots of flashbacks and thankfully Trying wasn’t filled with them. There were just enough to know what led Bryson and Mackenzie to this point and newsflash: she was also to blame.
And now we get to the review part of the review. I liked this story…a lot. But I didn’t really like Mackenzie. I know she was hurt and all that but she wasn’t entirely fair to Bryson and that made her hard to like. Because from the beginning we think Bryson is the bad guy but it turns out that MACK set the wheels in motion. Heather MacKinnon did a very good job of showing what its like for couples trying to have a child, especially when they are so super-focused on having a child that they lose sight of everything else. And Mackenzie did that…in a big way.
My favorite person in Trying? Mason. At the end of this story I cried the most at hearing what happened to him. He was sweet and attentive and amazing (aside from chasing a married woman part) and he deserved so much better than he got. I hope (if you’re listening new to me author, Heather) he gets his own story with a great big ol’ love!

Heather MacKinnon is an author living in the research triangle in North Carolina with her husband and two troublemaking dogs. She grew up on Long Island and spent her young adult years in various states in New England. This led to her subsequent addiction to Dunkin’ Donuts latte’s and her gratuitous use of the word “wicked”. She’s tried her hand at many jobs throughout the years as she strove to find the one that made her happy. Heather has sold chicken, kitchen knives, auto body supplies, PR packages, and computer software. She’s been a cashier, a waitress, a cook, a hotel concierge, a phlebotomist, and an Uber driver. Though her jobs have been many, her passion has always been reading. She’d hide in the bathroom and read between sales calls, or find a lonely corner in the kitchen and whip out her kindle between waiting on tables. After a lifetime of enjoying other people’s words, she decided to write down some of her own.
