Navy SEAL Joe MacDermid came to Thornehill Springs, North Carolina seeking peace and quiet and maybe a break from his hectic life. But his next-door neighbor Verna Love seems intent on making sure he doesn’t get any of either.
Verna takes pride in being a nice person, but when it comes to Joe, she just can’t help herself. Getting under his skin gives her an unexplainable satisfaction, and it doesn’t hurt that Joe is the picture of masculine perfection, especially when he’s angry. She’s smart enough to know that he’d never be interested in her, not with all her flaws, but she can’t pretend that goading him isn’t one of the highlights of her day.
But when circumstances force the two of them together, they might find love where they least expect.
I have to admit that as intriguing as the description of this book was, I was skeptical. A well-written blurb, as I can attest, can really make a book sound amazing…much like a movie trailer. And in that same way you often come away from a movie thinking, “all the good parts were in the trailer.”
Fortunately that was not the case with Where You Least Expect. This book is a surprising gem of a read that had me laughing a lot. And fanning my overheated skin.
So Joe and Verna seem to be frenemies, at best, but he’s a stand up guy and she’s pretty much the town sweetheart so the snipey, sarcastic banter is reserved mostly for the small strip of land between their homes. Verna swears, a lot and she is a girl after my own heart. Sometimes you just need a well-placed expletive to make your point. I liked them both and as soon as I understood Verna I knew I would enjoy the story.
Joe is at loose ends after his military career ended and Verna is still trying to decide if she’s going to go after her dream of becoming a fashion designer or keep playing floater to her family’s restaurant. This is what bonds them, though neither of them realize at the time.
And when things get sexy, boy do they! Joe and Verna have some seriously great chemistry well before things get a little more naked so you knew when sexy times came they would be off the chart. They were! But I really loved watching their relationship unfold, the way they supported one another in going after what they wanted and laughed together. I loved it all.
What I didn’t love was Joe being a typical man in one particular instance. I wanted to shake him and smack his handsome face but, hot damn, did I love Verna’s response. Sure she was hurt, but I prefer it when my heroines take on the “screw you” attitude instead of burying their sorrows in chocolate and tears, though I fully support drowning in cocktails.
Kaya Blue created a fun and sexy romance with Where You Least Expect. She’s a new author to me and I found this book #free on Amazon so I’m interested in reading more.
