Prologue

Cell phones equaled the bane of Julien’s existence, except when they saved a life. His client, a woman targeted by her monstrous ex, hadn’t answered all afternoon.

With his attention divided between a staff meeting and the difficult client who ignored logic, his frustration skyrocketed. He’d fired off several texts before calling her house. The repetitive drone of her dial tone sent his paranoia level to DEFCON 1.

A homebody, her adventurous streak ranged the scale between knitting and collecting scarves. She should have been home.

He understood the type of man she’d married, weak-minded, controlling, and abusive, puppeteer to her marionette. From the first and only meeting where she sought his help, fear had radiated from her pores, exhaled in every breath until cloaking her damaged spirit.

Purple, blue, and maroon hues splashed the western sky, the color of the bruises she failed to conceal when slouched in the office chair. Soon, darkness would bleach all color from the sky, the same way death bleached color from soulless bodies. He drove faster, the wheels drumming on the asphalt, chasing headlights forever out of reach, just like her reasoning for going back to the house of horrors.

The setting sun reminded him that her husband would return from work soon and carry his rage home in search of a target. Similarities with memories from childhood provoked a shiver despite the meager light converted to heat via the windshield. Childhood flashbacks served no useful purpose.

Ignorance and nonchalance had twined to frame a bull’s eye on her forehead. He’d advised her to leave home two days prior, yet fear prevailed, dominating courage and hope. They could handle legalities later, but not if she lacked a pulse. The frightened woman insisted on returning to the dirtball in hopes of—something better.

The late morning call had demonstrated her new vein of determination, a declaration she was ready to pack it in and start a new life. Failure to arrive at his office either meant the scales of indecision favored the familiar—or she’d arrived at her decision too late.

As a private investigator, he’d seen the scenario rehearsed and unfold many times. For reasons unknown, human nature’s broken record played out on the Mobius strip, fate having trapped him in the loop.

The steady slap and scrape of windshield wipers whisked the few drops of rain from his windshield, evidence of heaven mourning its angels. He stomped the accelerator.

His Mazda ate up the miles as he tried to focus on the facts. The closer he got to her house, the more his mind screamed with recriminations…Too late. You should’ve come earlier.

Stones skittered into the grass bordering her driveway as the car slid to a stop in front of the bungalow. The one with the front door ajar.

Oh God, I’m too late. Not again. With little recollection of exiting the car or racing through the doorway, he knew in his gut what awaited. He’d promised her help, and failed. It didn’t matter that she’d ignored his advice.

In the middle of the living room floor, she lay face down, naked, remnants of pain still etched in her expression. Blood pooled under her abdomen in an ever-widening arc. Spatters of red adorned the surrounding wall cabinets, TV, and sofa. Her hair, burnt copper in the fading light and streaming through the bay window, didn’t cover wide staring eyes.
His heart pounded and sweat beaded his forehead. With shaking fingers, he bent and touched her neck to find a pulse, weak, fast, and thready. She’ll never make it, his subconscious roared as he snatched up his cell to dial nine one one.
The universe absorbed his bellowed pain, now perceived as colder than her body.
The warmth of her soul flowed out to stain the carpet in wild abandon. Air redolent of copper and the residue of gunpowder propelled the sour wad of acid to the back of his throat. The yapping of her ankle biter at his feet didn’t register until he saw its footprints surrounding the woman’s thin frame, written in her blood.
There were no second chances to avoid catastrophe. His excuses wouldn’t comfort her now.

Reily is a West Coast girl transplanted to the opposite shore. When she’s not working with her dogs, you can find her curled up with a book or writing her next story. Past employment as an ICU nurse, private investigator, and work in the military police has given her countless experiences in a host of different environments to add a real world feel to her fiction.

Over time, and several careers, many incidents have flavored the plots of her stories. Man’s cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture is boundless, not contained by an infinite imagination. Witnessing the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knifepoint for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason, left an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. In counterpoint, she has observed a woman stop her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie. Life’s diversities are endless.

Though her kids are her life, writing is Reily’s life after. The one enjoyed after the kids are in bed or after they’re in school and the house is quiet. This is the time she kicks back with laptop and lapdog to give her imagination free rein.

In reading, take pleasure in a mental pause as you root for your favorite hero/heroine and bask in their accomplishments, then share your opinions of them over a coffee with your best friend (even if he’s four-legged). Life is short. Cherish your time.

Sweet Tea & Tattoo Ink ~ #FREE for ONE MORE DAY!!!

Dixie Covington is a redheaded spitfire with a sultry southern drawl. She loves her family, her small piece of the world and her art. But what Dixie desires more than anything is the freedom to fall in love with a man of her own choosing. So when her parents announce her engagement to a man she’s not even dating, Dixie and her closest friends pack their bags and head to The Big Easy for summer of fun and who knows what else.

Taz Nicorescu is another born and bred in New Orleans artist. With his exotic good looks and skills with a tattoo gun, he has no trouble finding female companionship when he wants it. Taz loves his life just the way it is, living with his best friend and running his well known Ink by Taz tattoo shop. He couldn’t have known a simple neighborly request would change everything he thought he knew about love and attraction.

What starts out as summer romance just might be true love!

EXCERPT:

“I’m spendin’ the summer in New Orleans.” Dixie sat at one of her delicate wooden chairs with the yellow, pink and green striped cushions and smiled at her one of her best friends and cousin Pepper.

“What? You can’t go away for the summer, Mama’s countin’ on you,” Pepper pouted. She was a beautiful woman, with dark brown skin and eyes so light brown they were almost golden. Her mama had married one of Dixie’s uncles and ran the only art gallery in Rock Hill.

Dixie waved a dismissive hand at Pepper. “I’ve already talked to Aunt Sarah about it and she urged me to go. Her only condition was that I send her one painting each week to make sure I’m still focused.” She smiled and lifted her bare shoulders in a shrug. “So, who wants to go with me?”

Marilyn chose that moment to breeze through the front door, arms full with two cloth sacks and her giant designer handbag. “Alright, I’ve got bourbon and mint, water, ice and tequila.” She kicked the door shut with one killer red stiletto and rushed to set the bags down. “I also brought butter pecan ice cream, shortbread cookies and a rib dinner from Dante’s.”

“Jeez girl, did you leave anything for the rest of Rock Hill?” Pepper teased her and plucked the tequila bottle from the bag. “But I approve and that’s why you’re my favorite cousin.”

Marilyn ignored Pepper’s phony smile and dropped into the seat in front of her. “You’re full of it, Pepper but I’ll take it. I could use it.”

Dixie sat on her cousin’s lap and wrapped her arms around Marilyn’s shoulders. “What’s wrong sugar?”

“I’m just tired and frustrated.” It was more than that but she didn’t want to get into it.

Dixie’s blue eyes widened and she stood, walking around the table until she faced her best friends. “I’ve got it! You should come with me to New Orleans, both of you! We can have a fun summer away from our stuffy, controlling parents, no offense Pepper, and enjoy being ourselves!” Before either woman could answer, Dixie turned and took advantage of the open floor plan, grabbing her cocktail shaker, muddler and ice. She didn’t notice the wide eyed stares until she began to muddle the mint and sugar. “What?”

“Are you out of your mind, Dixie Mae Covington?” Marilyn removed her blond locks from the loose bun at the base of her neck. “I can’t just pick up and leave for three months.”

Her auburn brows crinkled in confusion. “Why not? You can write anywhere there’s a power outlet and Wi-Fi.”

“Well I’m in,” Pepper said, grabbing the cocktail shaker and adding a few glugs of tequila. “Texas style,” she grinned and filled three tall glasses.

“Not that I’m not happy you’re comin’ sugar, but why?”

She shrugged and took a long, satisfying sip. “Duvall is a lying, cheating, no good son of a bitch?” Her harsh words were contradicted by her casual tone.

Dixie wrapped an arm around Pepper, “I always thought you were too good for him, doll. Good riddance.”

Marilyn glared, green eyes glittering outrage. “And what about your plans to find a job?”

“I’ve decided I’m going to do it. I’m going to design my own video game.”

Both women squealed and swallowed her up in a heap of enthusiastic hugs and kisses. “That’s so fantastic, Pepper! I’m so happy for you.”

Two pleading gazes turn on Marilyn. “Dang, don’t put it all on me.” They said nothing, just looked at her with stares that grew more pitiful by the second. “Oh fine, looks like we’re all going to the Big Easy this summer.”

Two

“Come on ladies, move your booties!” Dixie was up at the crack of dawn to pack up her giant SUV and had to wait for Marilyn and Pepper to get their acts together. She felt at ease now that she had a few suitcases worth of clothes, her paints, canvases and easel packed. She was determined that this summer would be transformative for her. She would sleep late if she felt like it, paint all day and maybe even try to sell a few while she was at it. Maybe after a few weeks she would look for a job.

Dixie punched her horn several times to motivate her cousins. When Pepper finally emerged from her family home, she signed. “Finally! Did you pack up your worldly possessions or what?” She watched her cousins lug several suitcases, computers and all manner of must-haves to the car.

Pepper frowned and blew a stray curl out of her face. “It’s a good thing Uncle Clive bought you this gas guzzler or one of us would have to ride on the roof.” She struggled to shove her high powered gaming computer in place.

“Oh for heaven’s sake, girl! Move aside.” Dixie climbed into the back and let the seat down. “There we go, now hand it all in.” Fifteen minutes later Pepper was all packed and slumped in the passenger seat, not bothering with the sweat on her brow. Dixie laughed at her cousin. “How are you tired when I did all the hard work?”

“You’ve got strong arms from hours of painting. I only have strong hands,” she held up her slender brown hands with pink nails. “Thank you for helping Dixie.”

“No problem, sugar. Now tell me about this game of yours.”

Pepper sighed. “I’m not ready to talk about it yet. Ask me again in a month.” She pasted on a smile that Dixie saw right through.

“I’ll let that go for now Pepper, but we’re responsible for each other this summer. You make sure I’m painting and I’ll make sure you are developing or whatever.”

“Deal. Now let’s get going because you know it’ll be like pulling teeth to get Marilyn away from her parents.”

“Don’t worry. We’re going either way. She’s either coming or she’s not, we’re not debating with Aunt Sula about this.” Marilyn’s parents were entirely too protective and they were insistent that she marry Kyle Swanson even though they’d broken up last year. “I’m thinkin’ of doing a series of paintings on each of us and our journey this summer.” She’d spent all night thinking about it. “I’m seeing lots of intense reds and oranges for Marilyn so that has to mean something.” They pulled into the grand old mansion Marilyn’s daddy bought her mama for their wedding.

Dixie laid on the horn. “I refuse to get out of this car and get sucked into their drama. By dinner we’ll be eating gumbo at some restaurant in the French Quarter.”

“That sounds divine! We have to go to that place famous for the beignets!” Pepper squealed and a smile lit up her beautiful face.

“Oh, most definitely! I swear I had powdered sugar on my lips when I woke up this morning!” They began talking over each other about all the food they would try in New Orleans. “Here comes Mar.”

She pulled two large suitcases behind her, a laptop bag draped across her body and a bright red purse hooked through her elbow. She yanked open the door behind Pepper. “Help out ladies so we can get the hell outta here!”

REVIEW ~ Mr. Sinful (Heartfelt Book 1) by Serenity Woods

Get your copy HERE!!!

ABOUT:

Seven Sexy Sins. One Mr. Sinful.

Faith Hillman is in trouble. She’s writing an article on ways to spice up your love life for her popular blog, but she’s hit a major snag—she hasn’t experienced any of the Seven Sexy Sins on her list. Luckily, her brother’s best friend, Rusty Thorne, offers to help with her research.

Having had a crush on him since the age of twelve, Faith agrees, on the proviso that he signs a contract keeping their short-term relationship a secret. Her brother once decked him for kissing her on her eighteenth birthday, so Rusty’s happy to concur.

While they work their way through the wicked list, Rusty enjoys showing Faith all the sexual delights he can think of. But it’s only as the sins draw to a close that he understands that, where love is concerned, he’s the student and Faith’s the teacher.

He’s determined to keep to the terms of the contract, but when it comes to the crunch, will he be able to let her go?

Warning: Includes rebellious hero who enjoys inserting Tab A into Slots B, C, and even occasionally D. Also includes highly inappropriate use of a Mars Bar.

I have to tell you that I absolutely LOVE the falling for your brother’s best friend trope. It’s hard to screw up and when done well, like Serenity Woods has done in Mr. Sinful, well it is a damn pleasure to read.

Faith is a well-known sex and relationships blogger without a lot of experience in either area, but she has nationwide recognition and a great new idea. Seven sexy sins. When her brother’s best mate, Rusty, offers to play her Mr. Sinful for just seven sexy encounters, she accepts without much thought to the consequences. It involves everything you think it would—scorching sex scenes, the feels, aww moments and even some naughty business with a chocolate bar—and then some.

I loved that Faith was the brave one in this relationship. Sure, she was naïve but it was due to a lack of experience not because she was sheltered and she was easy to root for. Fighting her feelings proves to be an impossible task, but watching her straighten her spine and decide to lay it all out there was amazing.

Rusty though, well he was magnificent. So damn tortured and scarred that he couldn’t see how amazing he was, and more importantly, all the good things he deserved. He’s the kind of guy you’re proud to call your book boyfriend. Stubborn to the point of stupidity, good and loving. Oh and did I mention, hot?

My only real complaint was Faith’s brother, Dan. It’s a personal peeve of mine, overprotective family, and he was kind of over the top. I understand his rationale but still, Faith was a grown woman with a job and a home so I think it’s unreasonable for him to think he can have that much say over her love life. He redeemed himself, but I still feel like I owe him a smack upside the head.

REVIEW ~ Oklahoma Starshine by Maggie Shayne

Get your copy HERE!!!

ABOUT:
A deeply moving, emotional story of a mother’s anguish, a father’s love, a family’s hope, this novel will renew your faith and restore your belief in miracles.

Veterinarian and single mom Emily Hawkins’ world is turned upside down when her precious little girl is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Only a bone marrow transplant can save 3-year-old Matilda Louise. Emily isn’t a match, but she’s determined to find someone who is, and that means tracking down Tilda’s biological father and his filthy rich family, a family she believes would’ve preferred her little girl had never been born.

But when she arrives in Big Falls, Oklahoma, nothing is the way she expected. Joey McIntyre, the billionaire’s son who’d been her sweet teenage summer fling, is as handsome and smooth as ever, but he seems to fall hard for Tilda-Lou at first sight, and he’s furious that Emily has kept his child from him. Which makes no sense at all. Soon Emily begins to suspect that the version history she’s believed all these years, might not be the real one. And if that’s true, she’s done a terrible, unforgivable thing.

But none of that matters as dire symptoms set in. The doctor advises Emily and Joe to give their girl the best Christmas ever. Fortunately, Christmas is what the Brand-McIntyre clan does best.

Emily and Joey put their feelings aside, coming together in a desperate search for a way to save their little girl against all odds.

But the truth is that little Matilda Louise is the one who’s saving them.

If you enjoyed Maggie Shayne’s Award Winning Texas Brands Series and Oklahoma Brands, you are going to LOVE the McIntyre Men.

I’ll tell you up front that I am a fan of Maggie Shayne and specifically her Oklahoma-centric series’. I love the feisty Brand women which means I’ll pretty much give every new series at least one book. When I came across Oklahoma Starshine, which combined the Brand women with the hot McIntyre men, I was all in. Throw in a secret baby and the possibility of a second chance romance and I’m a sucker for it!

I won’t rehash the synopsis but let me just tell you that I was totally prepared to have a real good hate-on for Joe…and Bobby Jo. And for a long time, I did. Even longer than Emily probably.

One of the things that often defines Maggie Shayne novels is the big family dynamic and I love it. Almost always. Sometimes though, like in the case of Emily, I think it can come across as bullying. Skepticism is perfectly understandable but seriously, NO ONE considered that just maybe Joe had done something to screw things up between him.

I loved watching Matilda and Joe fall in love as father and daughter, it just enhanced the whole holiday feel of things. To me Emily and Joe were secondary in this story, which was okay.

I loved that all the Brands show up and use all of their quite considerable otherworldly beliefs to help guide Tilda to good health.

Oklahoma Starshine was a lot of fun, magic, holiday spirit with just the right amount of romance to make this a quick, enjoyable read.

***At the time of this review Oklahoma Starshine is just #99cents!***
