Author: Kelsey Kingsley

Do we choose love? Or is it something decided by fate?

To Kinsey McKenna, Patrick Kinney was a persistent glob of sticky peanut butter. He had been stuck to the roof of her mouth, since they were both three years old, when fate seemed to send his family next door to hers. All the way from the coast of Ireland to River Canyon, Connecticut.
Over twenty-nine years, fate has been both kind and cruel and many choices have been made. Can things go back to when they were more innocent and magical? Patrick has a plan and just one night to try and take back the reins of his destiny and put the wrong things right with a trip down memory lane.
Fall in love again with this novella of firsts and second chances, in a little town where everything meant everything.

Kinsey McKenna.

My sweet thing across the Long Island Sound.

I’d laugh about it sometimes, lying on the couch in my basement. I had to cross the pond to give her my heart, and she had to cross the Sound to take it away.

It wasn’t very funny, but I’d laugh anyway, because what else could I do? I couldn’t just call her up, beg for her to take me back-I was married. Not happily, but married nonetheless, and I wasn’t a cheater. An arsehole, maybe, for allowing my soul to remain tethered to another woman, but I wasn’t in the habit of being unfaithful.

“Patrick?”

Kate’s voice stole me from my thoughts, and with a gasp, I scrambled to lay her memory back in my heart, tucking it in where it had remained hidden for all those years.

“What was that?” I asked, my voice hoarse.

“I had asked if you’ve seen Kinsey around here, while you were waiting.”

“What? Kinsey?”

Kate nodded. “Yeah, my sister Kinsey. You remember her?” She said it with the old teasing tone I had gotten to know so well during the years of my youth. The voice she used when she’d catch us kissing on the old swing set in the back yard, when she’d catch us closing her bedroom door, when she … “Patrick?”

There I went again. “Sorry,” I said, shaking my head. “So, Kinsey is here?”

I caught the upward twitch of Kate’s cheek, just above the corner of her mouth. “Yes, she is, but I’m telling you right now, she does not want to see you.”

“Were those her explicit instructions?” I asked, glancing around me in the waiting room, hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

“Something like that,” she said with a smirk, but then she stepped toward me, dropping her voice to a whisper. “But between you and me, I only promised to keep you away from her until after the surgery.”

“Ah, Kate. I could kiss ya.”

She rolled her eyes. “You better not be kissing anybody but your wife, Patrick Kinney. You’re still married.”

“Watch how fast I get divorced,” I said, crossing my arms and raising an eyebrow.

“Patrick,” she hissed. I had heard that before, so many times.

I relaxed my face, smiling softly. “I’m only kiddin’, Kate. But listen, it’s getting late, and I really should get home. Keep me posted on your dad, will ya? And tell Kinsey I said hi.” She nodded, stepping forward to give me another tight hug, and I turned to leave.

And the thing was, I had lied to Kate McKenna. Kinsey was back, and if I saw her, if I felt there was any chance of us getting back together, any chance at all, I would file for a divorce. I would unpack all of those memories I kept tucked away in my heart, I would hang them on a wall and display them on a shelf, and I would make her remember.

Because ten years had gone by. Ten whole years, and nothing was getting better. Nothing was hurting less, and nothing was getting that woman out of my head.

Life hasn’t been kind to Harper Evans.

The small-town gossip about her dead dad and drug-addicted mother has taken its toll. But when her mother is admitted to a long-term rehab facility a few hours away, Harper sees her chance for a fresh start.

A shoebox apartment above a Chinese restaurant isn’t exactly the escape she dreamed of, but she makes it work. With limited funds and no social life, she views her new city through a dusty old pair of binoculars.

There’s no harm in looking.

Just a peek and I’ll stop.

Harper finds her new pastime quickly turning into a full-fledged obsession. She begins falling for a man she doesn’t know—has never met—as she watches him have sex through the window of his apartment. Daydreaming about what it would be like if she were one of his conquests.

We all reach a point when watching isn’t enough—when we can no longer just be a spectator in our own life. That’s when it’s supposed to get good, right? When we take control and go after what we want. But what happens when it all blows up in our face and we’re left with less than nothing?

What then?

https://widget-prime.rafflecopter.com/launch.js

His large palms and long fingers press firmly against the glass, while her pale back slides vigorously up and down, a mess of red hair in tangles around her.

Everything I observe on the other side of that window hits somewhere deep within me, igniting a fire I didn’t know was possible.

I watch.

I see.

I feel.

Her legs unravel from his waist, and he spins her around. She braces her hands against the glass and her mouth drops open as he enters her from behind. This is the first glimpse I’ve got of her face, and she’s beautiful. Her features are soft and delicate. But she’s no different than the rest—they’re all beautiful.

This is his favorite position. He takes almost every woman like this. And since it’s a favorite of his, it’s also become a favorite of mine. Well, a favorite to watch. I’ve only ever had sex in the missionary position, but I have a good imagination.

I continue to watch. He pushes; she pushes. He pulls; she surrenders. Sometimes, it’s slow and sensual. Other times, it’s fast and hard. It’s up to him. He sets the pace. The women are at his mercy, but I never see them leave without a sated expression. So, I can only guess it’s as good for them as it is for him… and for me.

The woman’s beautiful face contorts as she throws her head back. Judging by the way her mouth is hanging open and her throat is moving, I imagine she’s screaming, probably his name.

He bends her over even farther, his strong hands gripping her torso as his hips collide with hers, and he continues to thrust in and out forcefully. The sweat coating his chest accentuates the definition of his muscles. Gritted teeth and a tight jaw tell me he’s getting close, which disappoints me because I could watch him for hours.

I let out a breath I’ve been holding, licking my dry lips as I watch him push in even harder, his movements becoming erratic.

I probably shouldn’t watch. I’m sure some would think it’s perverse.

I don’t have a fetish, per se, but I do have to admit I get off.

I’d have to be dead not to.

Eventually, his body relaxes, and he pulls out, quickly walking to a nearby trashcan and disposing of the condom. His firm backside is almost as good as the front. I bite my lip, watching the muscles in his back. I want that. I want him.

She disappears, probably going to the bathroom to get cleaned up. He continues to walk around the living room naked. He’s still somewhat erect, and even in this state, it’s something that makes my mouth water and my imagination run wild.

I’m definitely going to have to take a bath before the ice cream tonight. There’s no way I can stand the throbbing between my legs any longer.

Regretfully, I place the binoculars down on the window sill and head for the bathroom. Turning on the faucet, I let the scene from the last few minutes play on loop as I check the temperature water until it’s just right.

When the tub is full, I step in and sink down, resting my head back and allowing the warmth to envelop me—my mind immediately going to him. Closing my eyes, I imagine him. I think about what it would be like to be in the window… to be his prey… to be consumed by him.

His hands.

His mouth.

His tongue.

Slipping my hand between my legs, I press my middle finger firmly against my clit and make slow circles before dipping down and collecting the wetness that has nothing to do with my bath. It doesn’t take long for me to coax an orgasm to the surface. The familiar tightness in my stomach has me increasing the friction and chasing my release.

Exhaling my appreciation, I sink further into the tub. I’m not completely sated, like the women when they leave his apartment, but I’ve taken the edge off enough to relieve the ache.

When I’m out of the bath and dried off, I walk to the freezer, making my selection for the night.

Red Velvet Cake.

Returning to the window sill with my carton of ice cream, I curl my legs under me and pick the binoculars back up.

He’s alone, and he’s no longer naked, but this look is a close second. The gray sweatpants he’s wearing hang loosely on his hips, displaying the V of his muscles that lead down below. His hair is wet. I don’t know why, but thinking of him being in the shower at the same time I was in the bath makes me feel connected to him in some weird way. I like it. Sometimes, I like watching what he does after the women leave almost as much as I enjoy watching what he does while they’re there.

Almost.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing content that may be offensive to readers.

“Do you even know what you’re doing?” he murmurs into my ear.
I nod.
I can feel him smile. “I’m a monster … remember? I don’t play nice.”
“I’m not asking you to,” I reply.
“Good. Because I am not about to listen,” he says, his voice gruff and demanding as he takes my earlobe into his mouth and sucks. Then bites.
Hard enough for it to hurt, but soft enough for it not to bleed.
“Think you can handle me?” he muses. “That you can taunt me like that and get away with it?”
I shake my head, but he pulls my hair harshly, forcing my head back and exposing my neck.
His lips make a trail down towards the base of my neck, where he plants a hot kiss filled with desire … and something else. A hunger for bad things.
He wraps his free arm around my waist and pulls me close while his tongue dips out to lick my skin.
My legs quake. I feel something between my legs … excitement … something I haven’t felt in a very long time.
“I’m not gentle. I’m not nice,” he whispers, sinking his teeth into my skin.
I hiss, but still don’t reply.
“You’ve pushed me too far now, Syrena,” he groans. “I’m going to take what belongs to me now. Inch by inch, your body will be mine.”

I should’ve kept my distance, kept my guard up, but Ellie Blackwell had me feeling things I’d never felt before—good things, really fucking good things. There was no way in hell that I was gonna walk away from that. It might’ve been a mistake to get wrapped up in her when there were so many unknowns surrounding her past, but in my gut, I knew she was the one.
I didn’t care what obstacles stood in my way, I was going to make her mine.

Review ~ Fake Wife by Stacey Lynn

Get your copy HERE!!!

ABOUT:

This marriage is strictly business . . . until the temptation gets way too real.

Corbin: I loved my grandma, but I don’t need her money. All I care about is keeping the house—the only place that’s ever felt like home. That, and screwing over my dad, who wants to turn the property into a mall. There’s only one catch: To receive my inheritance, I have to get married within six months. Me, the guy who’s never dated a girl for more than six minutes. Now I need to find a woman I can trust. So when I’m rear-ended by a Prius, I figure it’s a sign that I’m supposed to meet gorgeous, down-to-earth Teagan Monroe.

Teagan: First I lose my job. Then I come home and find out—in the most graphic way possible . . . yeah, that way—that my boyfriend is a cheating jerk. And then I speed off and nearly kill Portland’s sexiest bachelor. Corbin Lane should be pissed. Instead, he offers me more money than I’ve ever seen in my life to marry him and live together in a mansion for two years. No sex. No feelings. Just cash—enough to make all my dreams come true. Then we go and break all our rules . . . and I realize I’m falling in love with my fake fiancé.

I have to say that marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes. I don’t care that it’s predictable because what I love most is how the hero and heroine try to fight a losing battles because it is a blast to watch!

Corbin and Teagan have both had their run of bad crap lately. The only family member who mattered to him died and put a huge caveat on his inheritance, which at first had me thinking, “oh, poor little rich boy.” But the more I learned about Corbin—and the sperm donor he called ‘dad’—the more I understood his reason for going through with the charade. And Teagan, well she just had one of those bad days that usually ended with all of your closest girlfriends and copious amounts of junk food and booze. Since she has no girlfriends, she gets to add more crap to her life…in the form of an auto accident.

Don’t get me wrong, Stacey Lynn didn’t reinvent the genre by any means, but Fake Wife was a fun read that kept me smiling (nearly) the whole way. I really enjoyed the insta-love where I normally loathe it, because neither Corbin nor Teagan acted on it. In fact, they fought it so hard that at times I wanted to clunk their heads together.

Fake Wife was honestly just a damn good time. There was the greedy villainous relative who wanted to take the inheritance and make even more money on it—but I’ll say it again Stacey Lynn changed it up by giving us even more reasons to hate the villain. There was the expected miscommunication, but it was resolved quick enough that it didn’t ruin the ending.

In general, I’ve been hit or miss with this author since her Fireside series ended, but Fake Wife has given me a very convenient case of reader’s amnesia because I truly enjoyed it.

Review ~ Oklahoma Christmas Blues by Maggie Shayne

Get your copy HERE!!!

ABOUT:

Darryl is on a quest for peace. His chance at fatherhood was taken from him long ago, and an IED in Iraq ensured he’d never get another. In Big Falls, the McIntyre brothers hire him to keep an eye on their beautiful cousin Sophie in case her criminal ex shows up. He doesn’t expect to fall head over heels.

Sophie McIntyre’s life was blown apart by a drug dealing ex who cost her her job and nearly her medical license. She comes to Big Falls because she has nowhere else to go. And the minute she gets there, things start to get better.

Is it because of that letter to Santa her Aunt Vidalia convinced her to write?

Within days she meets a beautiful man with a deeply wounded soul. And oddly, she finds herself giving him the same advice the town Santa gave to her—try believing again, and if it’s too much to believe, then just try hoping.

Love, magic, and miracles ensue.

Because this is Big Falls, Oklahoma. Miracles are an everyday occurrence around here. Especially at Christmastime.

If you know me at all, then you know that Maggie Shayne is one of my one-click authors and that is especially true with the ever expanding Oklahoma branch of the family! This is a heaping serving of Christmas magic mixed in with a little bit of love and romance.

Sophie was in Oklahoma visiting her uncle and aunt-in-law (Vidalia of the Oklahoma Brands), but really it’s because her ex cost her a fancy job at well respected hospital and he nearly cost her career. So she’s lying low and trying to figure out what happens next and going back to her roots as a bartender.

Darryl was hired on the down low by her overprotective cousins, the titular McIntyre Men, to keep her safe in case her ex comes after her. But Sophie thinks Darryl is the bouncer who likes to flirt with her, until a misunderstanding forces the truth out quickly. I really appreciated this in Oklahoma Christmas Blues because sometimes we really don’t need to have it drawn out over the length of the story. It was handled and we all moved forward.

The cutest part of this story was the letters to Santa and how slowly they came true. Of course there’s a lesson to be learned here because neither Sophie or Darryl asked for material things. They wanted help getting their lives back on track while they sorted it out for themselves.

Again Maggie Shayne has done a fantastic job with this fun holiday tale to kickoff the newest series. Oklahoma Christmas Blues was a quick read but my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. I can’t wait to watch each of the McIntyre men fall, and I have Oklahoma Moonshine already!

Side note: I missed Vidalia’s story and I’m adding it to my TBR list! You can do the same here!

Review ~ Up for Heir – Ruth Cardello

Get your copy HERE!!!

ABOUT:

Spencer Westerly is his own man. He didn’t need his father’s money to build his wildly successful tech company—and he doesn’t want to deal with the fallout from old family secrets. But as much as Spencer wants to avoid Westerly drama, his grandmother—the family matriarch—is determined to pull him back into the fold. And she’s discovered the perfect lure: his college sweetheart, Hailey.

Although she broke his heart, Hailey is still the only woman he’s ever loved. Now that she’s back and looking as desirable as ever, Spencer is determined to get a second chance.

A lot has changed for Hailey Tiverton. The only thing that hasn’t? The inexplicable pull she feels toward Spencer. When they were younger, his work was his priority. Now, he’d better be willing to prove that, this time, love comes first…

I’ll let you know right up front that I am a pretty big Ruth Cardello fan. Also, I got a copy of this from NetGalley for a review!

From the beginning of Up for Heir, I was pretty sure that I would hate Delinda. She made it easy, by being so blatantly manipulative. The old woman has a pretty fractured family, but most of it isn’t her fault, and now that she’s older and lonely, she wants nothing more than to have them all back into the fold.

Too bad she never heard the old adage about catching more flies with honey.

Delinda wants Spencer back in his life and she sees his old college girlfriend as the quickest route to her goal. But I don’t think even Delinda counted on falling in love with Hailey or her niece Skye, which made it easier to like her. More importantly, I understood her and I LOVED the way Hailey managed to get through to her.

Now on to Spencer and Hailey.

Boy, oh boy did these two give me a headache! Hailey with all of her second guessing—though I understood her reasons—was like a bad roller coaster ride. And Spencer, yeah dude, we get it. Your mom is a big ol’ liar and gave you some issues. But you’re a grown man so suck it up and get over it.

You could tell right away that feelings still lingered between them, but they couldn’t get out of their own way long enough to make it happen! Honestly though, I liked Spencer and I wanted him to find forgiveness and reconnect with his family, but if I’m being honest I still didn’t think he deserved Hailey. The way he dropped the ball in college and the way he just jumped to conclusions, doesn’t sound like a guy in love…no matter what the photos say.

I enjoyed Up for Heir, a lot. Despite the fact that both main characters kind of worked my nerves, I had a good time reading this book and it only took me about a day to finish it.

Now I’m very curious about Brett’s story, so I’m going back and getting a copy of In the Heir!
